Locate a recent press release from an organization, business, or corporation. Search the web site of the organization, business, or corporation for a recently posted press release. Link titles might include key words like “public relations,” “media relations,” or “news.”


Write a 700 to 900-word critique depicting the effectiveness of a press release.


Who is the target audience?


What is the intended effect?


What is the message in the press release?


Finally, in a concluding paragraph, synthesize the main differences between advertising and public relations/press releases in general and in your paper specifically.  Provide in-text parenthetical citations for paraphrased/summarized and directly quoted content and include an APA-compliant Reference list.


Be sure to attach to your paper (or provide links to in your Reference entries) a copy of the press release and the advertisement used.  Formatting of the paper and documentation of sources must be APA compliant.

  • How reliable is anecdotal evidence that movie violence causes violence in real life?

  • Should the Internet be regulated? If you were in charge, how would you regulate it?

  • When and why did people become concerned about the effects of media? When did systematic research into media effects begin?

  • What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of the various media for advertising? How do advertisers influence the editorial content of the media in which their ads appear?

  • Which is the most essential news value: the audience interest, importance, or timeliness of the story? Why?

  • What is your perception of PR professionals based on your readings, current events, and personal experiences? What are some of the public relations tactics that critics consider to be of questionable ethics?

  • Researchers have shown that subliminal persuasion doesn’t work, yet some critics insist that the constant barrage of regular advertising keeps certain brand names in the consumer’s mind, making it seem natural to subconsciously reach for that brand on the store shelf. Do you agree that this could be considered a form of subliminal advertising? Why or why not?

  • Do industry professionals have the ethical responsibility to produce society-making media rather than segment-making media? Why or why not?
