Suppose you are part of the following scenario:


You are a public relations manager who must present information regarding changes in retail store operations to three sets of stakeholders of a retail clothing chain. The stakeholders are store managers, employees, retail customers, and the public. You must explain adjustments that allow employees to come to work on fewer days a week in an effort to combat rising gas prices and save money on store operations.


Stores will close on Sundays. On Monday through Saturday, stores will open an hour later and close an hour earlier. Full-time employees, including managers, will work four 10-hour days a week. Part-time employees will consolidate their hours in 1-, 2-, or 3-day workweeks, depending on how many hours they are scheduled to work. No stores are closing, but no new stores are opening.


While constructing your messages, determine the characteristics of your audience and consider the appropriate communication type and style for each audience.


Complete Part I: Business Writing Steps. Outline the steps you must take in drafting the three business communications. This document can take the form of a list, a flowchart, or a Web diagram.


Complete Part II: Portfolio. Write three messages by selecting one message format for each audience. Explain the changes in the retail store operations. Communication can be either written or oral. What type of written and oral communication do you receive in your workplace? What information do these communications convey, and are there more effective ways to deliver these messages?


What are two strengths and two areas for improvement in your own business communication abilities? You may address verbal, written, or electronic communication; provide examples to explain your choices. How could your improvement in these two areas enhance your work performance?


Week 2:


What are the three most important points that a group must keep in mind when working collaboratively on a writing project? Why? Support your response with references to the readings and personal experiences.

How can a person"s individual values and beliefs affect his or her responses to people of other cultures?

What are some barriers to effective cross-cultural communication? How can these barriers be overcome?


Week 3:
In your opinion, what are situations that positive information can and must be delivered using the following methods of communication: face-to-face, telephone, printed mail, and e-mail? Provide examples using references from the readings and your own experiences to support your opinion.

What is the difference between writing using active and passive verbs? Provide examples. Why are active verbs generally considered more effective in business communication?

All industries and companies have their own jargon. What is some of the jargon related to the company or industry in which you work? When is it appropriate to use jargon? How might you present company- or industry-specific information without using jargon?


Week 4:


In your opinion, when can or must negative messages be delivered using these methods of communication: face-to-face, telephone, printed mail, and e-mail? Provide examples and refer to the readings and your own experiences to support your opinion.

What strategies would you use to maintain a caring, sensitive tone, even when writing a negative message? Provide an example by writing a short e-mail message to a coworker who has requested assistance with a project not on your priority list. Assume you are already overwhelmed with your own work.

Consider a current event that has created a negative situation for a company and describe that event briefly. How could the company write a message to communicate the situation to the general public?


Week 5:


What are your strengths and weaknesses as a presenter? Based on the readings, what are some techniques you can use to improve your oral presentation skills?

Some people believe that the format of a report is not important when the content is concrete and well written. What is your opinion? Explain your answer.

Clipart, charts graphs and other graphics and animation are often used in Microsoft PowerPoint presentations how have you incorporated these into your presentation? Can you have too many graphics in a presentation? Why or why not?
